- How do I know my drains are blocked?
There will likely be a strong smell around drainage covers as effluent is not draining away. If your neighbours are not affected then it is likely your drainage system that is blocked, in this instance you should call us. If your neighbours are also affected, then it is likely that the blockage is in the main sewer; in this instance the local water authority should be contacted.
Helpful unblocking tips:-
- Use a few kettles full of boiling water to help dissolve hard insoluble fat lumps and move them further down the system into bigger lines
- Use a hosepipe in the drain runs. Push the hosepipe (without any attachments) down to the blockage and hopefully the water pressure will remove the blockage
- Purchase a set of drain rods from your local DIY store. Find the nearest access point to your blockage and the force should remove many small blockages. A 4 inch plunger added to the drain rods will help
- Use some industrial strength drain unblock (available from your local DIY store) in sinks and baths to help disperse blockage
- Keep a bottle by the sink to pour old liquid fat and grease, then dispose of in a waste bin
- Do not put sanitary products down toilets, including wet wipes and nappies
- Avoid toilet fresheners that hang on the rim of the toilets as these can become dislodged and fall into the toilet. When the toilet is flushed the plastic can become lodged and cause a blockage.
